In 1983, David Bowie launched the Serious Moonlight Tour (its name was taken from a line in his song “Let’s Dance,” released on the album of the same name that year). This global event spanned 96 performances, entertaining approximately 2.6 million fans and becoming the largest tour by any musician that year. The official poster for the tour featured a 1980s-style Deco illustration of the singer against a celestial backdrop. Günther Kieser’s poster for the West German performances is far more conceptual but still relatively restrained in relation to his other work. Lacking any type of physical construction, it positions Bowie in a double exposure in which he appears to be both soulfully gazing at the viewer and exuberantly singing. In both cases, he wears his signature suit and tie from the tour.
