This vibrantly colored poster promoting the 1953 West German musical comedy film Das Singende Hotel (The Singing Hotel) by an unknown designer evokes the glamour and fun of the Hollywood musicals released during this decade in Technicolor. However, it was actually filmed in black and white. It was one of a number of musicals released in West Germany during this decade in response to demand by German audiences entranced by groundbreaking American films like An American in Paris (1951) and Singin’ in the Rain (1952, released in Germany in 1953). Both of those films were distributed in Germany by Deutsche London Film, also the distributor of The Singing Hotel and one of the country’s largest film distributors between 1940 and 1956.
