This poster promotes a concert by the Mexican Youth Choir held in Warsaw in May 1968. This was a year of dramatic events for both countries: in Mexico there was the Mexican Student Movement, the Tlatelolco Massacre, and the Summer Olympics, while Poland witnessed student protests against the ruling Polish United Workers’ Party and a mass exodus of much of the country’s surviving Jewish population following an antisemitic campaign by the party. This innocuous image of a guitar, its graduated stripes of color suggesting the tie-dye patterns popular at the time, is by the Polish graphic designer Jan Heydrich, who produced many images for cultural events in Poland during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
