John Rieben designed many of the posters in the series of 16 produced for the Chicago Cultural Communication Project by the Container Corporation of America (CCA) and the Center for Advanced Research in Design (CARD). This Wisconsin native had studied at the Kunstegwerbeschule (School of Applied Arts) in Zurich after the war, and absorbed the lessons of the Swiss Grid Style championed there by Joseph Muller-Brockmann. The Field Museum, founded in 1894, is one of the largest natural-history museums in the world. In keeping with the simple abstractions that characterize all the works in the series, here Rieben represents the institution with stylized natural forms rather than by the distinctive neo-classical structure that houses it.
