In 1968, the Container Corporation of America (CCA) commissioned a series of 10 posters titled “Aspects of New York”; four of them were created by the Japanese-American graphic designer Tomoko Miho (the CCA produced a similar series for Chicago). These stylish posters, partly influenced by the Swiss International Typographic Style or The Swiss Style, were intended to celebrate the city’s famous locations, among them Broadway, Lincoln Center, and the subway system. Here, the designer shows structures in repeat from the New York City skyline, bathed in black shadows and brilliant red, suggesting both the city’s dynamism and its murkier underbelly.
