Chwast designed this poster showing Uncle Sam (the sun setting on his stars-and- stripes hat a reference to safer solar energy) jamming with his electric guitar to promote the five “No Nukes” benefit concerts organized by MUSE (Musicians United for Safe Energy) at Madison Square Garden that year. This anti-nuclear activist group was founded in 1979 shortly after the Three Mile Island nuclear accident in March of that year; in addition to the concerts, in September 1979 some 200,000 people attended the MUSE rally in Battery Park City. As so often, here Chwast uses humor and colorful, whimsical motifs to draw attention to a serious issue.
