This is one of several designs Charles White III made for the Los Angeles company Paper Moon Graphics, most of which, like this one, were also intended for the company’s celebrated greeting cards. Paper Moon, founded in 1977, upended the conventional imagery of greeting cards from the beginning, hiring local artists like White to produce what its first director, Robin Carpenter, described as “cutting-edge, mostly pop culture, ‘Southern California’ airbrush illustration.” The image here reflects the company’s tendency to favor tongue-in-cheek nostalgia bordering on kitsch in its early products.
