This is one of a large number of posters commissioned from Roger Broders by the Paris-Lyon-Mediterranée (PLM) Railway of France to promote national tourism. Broders, a French artist and illustrator, is best known for the designs he made for PLM, advertising destinations along its route in the French Alps (as here) and the Côte d’Azur; PLM even paid for him to go to the locations he was hired to represent. In this Art Deco composition, showing a game from the 1930 Ice Hockey Championships, Broders’s sophisticated use of perspective, with the players in the foreground set against the Olympic Stadium and mountains of Chamonix, creates both a vivid sense of the sporting action and an almost decorative semi-abstract composition of shapes and colors.
