Paula Scher designed this poster for Bring in ‘Da/Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk for its move from the Public Theater to the Ambassador Theatre on Broadway in April 1996. This hugely successful production ran there until January 1999. Like some of the other designs for the show collection, it features a photograph (in this case by Richard Avedon no less!) of the choreographer and dancer Savion Glover in a dynamic dance pose, apparently interacting with the various blocks of typography, each with text comprised of positive reviews of the show. The blocky wood typefaces that defined much of Scher’s campaign for Bring in ’Da/Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk and indeed her identity for the Public in general were swiftly imitated in other theater and art posters, magazine layouts, and commercial advertising, effectively changing the typographic style of this decade and beyond.
