Rolf Armstrong’s design for Murad cigarettes, featuring a glamorous siren and the injunction to “Be nonchalant,” clearly relates to his reputation as “the father of the calendar girl.” He made his name during the 1920s and ’30s with illustrations of pin-up girls and covers for fashion magazines. The hand-rolled MURAD cigarettes were first produced in New York in the early 20th century and point to the new taste for pure Turkish tobacco. Early posters and cigarette cards for the brand typically emphasized its Eastern roots, with figures dressed in Turkish-style clothing in “exotic” settings. In 1911, however, Murad was acquired by Lorillard Tobacco Company and by 1925, the brand’s image was more closely allied with mainstream American film and fashion styling.
