This 1940 propaganda poster, warning Americans of the risks of becoming embroiled in the totalitarian ideologies (most notably Nazism and Communism) of the war in Europe, reflects the isolationist political tendencies of the moment. The message of this simple illustration, showing the “bait” of such “ism propaganda” dangling over a huge man trap in the snowy woods, could not be more literal. The printers, Kelly-Read & Co. of Rochester, New York, also produced a number of posters for government agencies after the entry of the United States into the war on December 7, 1941. After the war, they returned to standard commercial advertising, especially for alcoholic drinks.
