Paula Scher has been on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts (SVA) in Manhattan since 1992, the year after she joined Pentagram. In 1996, she was asked to design a poster for the school’s ongoing Subway Series celebrating its 50th anniversary. The handwritten letters are composed of a long list of artists admired by Scher in a wide range of fields and is yet another example of her innovative approach to lettering. In a February 19, 2019, interview on the SVA’s website (https://sva.edu/features/letter-perfect-subway-series-hall-of-famer-paula-scher-video), Scher explained that on the subway “you need something of enormous power and scale…Subtlety doesn’t work on the subway at all.” She also noted that the poster “was designed to be interactive…people were supposed to write their own names on it.” The SVA has been commissioning faculty members to design posters for this ongoing series since soon after it opened as the Cartoonists and Illustrators School in 1947. It was intended to showcase their talents, reach new audiences, and promote the college.
