This poster was issued by the New York City Art Teachers Association, a standing professional committee of the United Federation of Teachers to promote its annual art education conference. Its stated mission is “To encourage and support art educators in their profession and to advocate for quality art programs at all levels of education and in our communities.” Thomas Naegele’s colorful design showing bees at a honeycomb suggests both the industry and the collaborative nature of its members’ work. Naegele was 99 years old when he designed the poster. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1924, he came to the United States in 1940 in flight from the Nazis. He later graduated as valedictorian from the School of Industrial Art, now the High School of Art & Design. Naegele’s first career was in magazine publishing and as television art director for advertising pioneer J. Walter Thompson before he turned to teaching in 1959. He taught commercial art at the High School of Art & Design, where the conference promoted here was held, between 1966 and 1991—and was obviously brought out of retirement to design this charming image.
