This very simple design, featuring only a border of flags, bunting, an eagle, and smoking cannons in addition to the lettering, urges Americans to support the government’s Third Liberty Loan during World War I. The message is intended to appeal to the viewer’s patriotic instincts and perhaps also to the insecurities of a population consisting largely of the descendants of immigrants, many of whom had only recently obtained citizenship. The government’s Committee on Public Information instituted four wartime Liberty Loan drives, and a fifth immediately after the Armistice in November 1918. The third loan referred to here was for three million dollars; it opened in April 1918 and lasted for about a month.
