This poster advertises the German release of the hugely popular American musical film Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and is a German-language version of the now-iconic original poster by American painter and illustrator Ted CoConis. The German version was called Anatevka after the fictional Eastern European shtetl in which the story is set in the early years of the 20th century. The illustrated composition here is dominated by the character of the impoverished milkman who struggles to marry off his five daughters without a dowry and in the context of local pogroms and persecution by the Russian government.
