Paula Scher was one of several prominent graphic designers commissioned to create posters for the International Design Congress held in Glasgow, Scotland in 1993 on the theme of Design Renaissance. Alan Fletcher and Pierre Bernard were among the others. In this design, which appears to represent a dig at the pretensions of some of her colleagues in the field, she promotes a new typeface called “Ambiguity” in upper and lowercase letters in a limited range of colors; careful observation allows the viewer to make out the words “Design Renaissance,” literally reinforcing a sense of its initial ambiguity.
