In the first Swiss action led by Greenpeace, the environmental organization protested the felling of fifty thousand square meters of forest to allow space for the 1987 World Ski Championships, held at the ski resort of Crans Montana in Canton Valais. Many of the demonstrators chained themselves to surviving trees. In the poster, the event is mockingly titled “The Alpine Tree-Fellers Championship 1987” and the brutal destruction of the local forest is suggested here by the pattern of stylized green fir trees, broken at one corner by a section of falling trees and a chainsaw motif, both, like the new title, represented in blood red.
