This is a German workers’ safety poster issued by the German Commercial Employers’ Liability Association. This organization was part of the statutory accident insurance system that had been introduced by German chancellor Otto von Bismarck in 1884, the cornerstone of a broader welfare system that was the first of its kind in the world, and intended to address some of the social problems of a rapidly expanding industrial society. When this poster was produced in about 1950, postwar Germany was again on the brink of a decade of rapid growth known as the “Wirtschaftswunder” or economic miracle. The simple illustration was meant to be hung in factories and shows a welder working on a metal drum, with certain areas lettered for special attention as described on the poster.
