Another early Solidarity poster by Polish painter and graphic designer Krzysztof Baran commemorates the 25th anniversary of the large-scale Poznań protest of June 28, 1956 (known as “Poznań June”). It began at Poznań’s Cegielski Factories where the workers demanded better working conditions and was violently suppressed by the regime, resulting in numerous deaths and injuries. This was the first of a series of such protests by the Polish people against the Communist government of the People’s Republic of Poland. Baran was one of several artists to commemorate this milestone event in Polish history, seen as the first serious strike against the Communist regime; his design here shows a huge crevasse opening up in a block of red.
