This poster promotes the 1933 German melodrama Das Meer Ruft (The Sea Calls) about a Baltic sea captain during World War I. It was created by the prolific German poster designer Ernst Litter, who produced posters for both German and foreign films released in Germany during the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. Litter typically worked in a conventional style, eschewing modernist developments in German design in favor of more popular and torrid forms of representation.
