This poster reflects the “Black is beautiful” movement that emerged in the 1960s and ’70s. It advocated a broad appreciation of Black culture and identity, both past and present. It also affirmed the physical appearance of Black people, celebrating natural hairstyles like the “Afro” and the full range of hair textures, skin colors, and individual characteristics of those in the African American community. Tony Currin’s images also appeared in a 1978 book titled Black Woman: Photographs by Tony Currin.
