The poster, in a traditional style, promotes a play based on Harold Bell Wright’s bestselling 1907 novel, The Shepherd of the Hills, a romantic tale of mountain people living in the Ozarks. Such was the success of the book that Wright collaborated on this dramatization, seen in various productions from 1915 to 1916, with Elsbery W. Reynolds. It was later made into no less than four films: in 1919, 1928, 1941 (featuring John Wayne), and 1964.
