Like the posters he designed for TWA’s other services, Mandel’s poster promoting the airline’s London route incorporates London symbols beloved by tourists: this time the flying man is greeted by a Royal Guard in his traditional bearskin hat and bearing the British flag. (Did British people ever really say “Tallyho!” except in American movies?) From the mid-1940s to the early 1970s, TWA and Pan Am were the only U.S.airlines that flew to Europe. TWA had begun its post-war operations in 1946 with a fleet of 10 Lockheed Constellations. In October 1961, such propellor planes were entirely replaced when TWA became the first all-jet airline in international passenger service. It is possible that these posters were made around this time.
