This work-safety poster, produced by the National Safety Council during World War II, reiterates the point that workplace accidents serve the enemy by impeding output and, ultimately, delaying victory. The disheveled, clueless-looking character on the right, with a cigarette in his mouth and untied shoelaces, is marked by an arrow pointing to his official title “Old Man Accident.” At the left, the ugly, caricatured figures of the enemy leaders Adolf Hitler, Emperor Hirohito, and Benito Mussolini cheerfully welcome him into their circle.
