The Hessischer Rundfunk is one of nine regional public broadcasting corporations in Germany. It is similar to National Public Radio in the United States; however, all residents of West Germany were required to pay subscription fees to support it rather than donate voluntarily. This poster was part of a series Günther Kieser made for the media company’s documentary program on psychotherapy. This particular episode focused on “Ways out of Compulsion and Fear” and is paired with an M.C. Escher-style optical illusion suggesting a staircase into the mind. Each design attempts to visually emphasize the depth of the subject while remaining accessible to general audiences. Unlike many of Kieser’s other posters that combine mediums, this one is simply a photograph of a surreal painting by the designer on a wooden board.
