This poster was used to promote a traveling ballet troupe led by Nadia Sauvage that specialized in the historic dances of the royal court of Louis XIV, known as the Sun King. Here, Lefor-Openo incorporated such celestial symbolism into the costume of the central figure in addition to other lavish period details. Part of de Gaulle’s vision for the future of France was the building of a strong national identity around its rich history. Figures like Louis XIV were often celebrated in popular culture as symbols of a shared greatness. Performances like the ones advertised in these posters contributed to that kind of mythology and reinforced a sense of cultural unity among French citizens.
