The Public Theater described its 2003 production of Shakespeare’s pastoral comedy As You Like It, in which the heroine, Rosalind, is disguised as a young man called Ganymede, as follows: “Using only their own indefatigable imaginations and the infinite imagery of Shakespeare’s language, a young company of six actors takes on all 15 roles. First presented in a parking lot on the Lower East Side, this fast-paced physical tour-de-force captures the raw energy and beautiful simplicity of one of Shakespeare’s most clever comedies.” Paula Scher’s sketchy image of an Elizabethan youth in a slightly camp pose with male and female attributes and contemporary accessories communicates something of the irreverence and vitality of Erica Schmidt’s version of the play to a street-savvy New York audience.
