Erected between 1966 and 1973, the World Trade Center was a complex of seven buildings located in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan. From the time of its construction, the 110-story Twin Towers became a defining feature of the New York City skyline. This poster shows how the Towers dwarfed the surrounding architectural landscape, and points to the evolution of the Financial District by including the old and the new side by side. While the poster is undated, it had to be printed prior to the installation of an enormous antenna on top of One World Trade Center in 1979. The most curious aspect of this design is the unexpected use of the Peignot typeface to spell out “New York.” Designed by A.M. Cassandre in 1937, it does not have a lower case. In this instance, the letters roughly emulate the jagged skyline, with some extending higher than others.
