Golden Earring was a 1960s Dutch rock band that achieved global fame with the song “Radar Love” that appeared on its album Moontan in 1973. Günther Kieser typically created the entire compositions for most of his posters from scratch; here, however, he recycles a cropped version of the cover art for Moontan based on an image by the Dutch photographer Ronnie Herz in Amsterdam and art directed by Golden Earring singer Barry Hay. While the model is unknown, records indicate that she flew from London for the shoot and was intended to look like the kind of exotic dancer featured in flashy revues in Las Vegas and Paris. Kieser’s contribution to the finished poster was the neon-inspired typography. Deemed too risqué for American audiences, the U.S. release of the album was promoted by a close-up photograph of an ear with a large gold earring. In the Netherlands, however, the popularity of the design proved so enduring that it appeared on an official postage stamp in 2012.
