In his poster for NET Playhouse’s season on the 1930s, Chwast evokes the decade with a cartoon-like illustration of a couple in evening dress being driven in a 1930s convertible; with a typically subversive detail, he contrasts the stony-faced profiles of these two figures with that of Pluto, Mickey Mouse’s faithful canine companion, who looks knowingly at the viewer from behind them. NET Playhouse was a television anthology series presented by National Educational Television, in operation between 1966 and 1972 (it was ultimately superseded by PBS) and offering drama, history, comedy, musicals, and sci-fi, some produced by NET itself and other imported from production companies like the BBC.
