Chwast decorates his colorful, playful image of the famous musical clock tower at the entrance to FAO Schwarz with toys and characters from children’s stories to promote the store’s new location at 767 Fifth Avenue where it had just moved from further downtown. His attention to engaging and comic detail again reflects his extensive work as a children’s book illustrator. The celebrated New York toy store, the oldest in the United States, had been founded in Baltimore in 1862 before moving to New York in 1870. It closed in 2015 and relocated to Rockefeller Plaza in 2018.
