This is the fourth promotional poster that Chwast designed in 2004 for The Zak Company in Tokyo, Japan, announcing the Year of the Monkey. Chwast’s lineup of three monkeys, one with sealed eyes, another with sealed ears, and the third with sealed lips references the Buddhist adage “hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil” associated with the representation of the Three Wise Monkeys that emerged in Japan in the 16th century. It is based on a design that he had made the previous year for The Nose (in the Seymour Chwast archive), his biannual publication (1997–2009) dedicated to promotion and to a range of social issues.
