This poster, illustrating a weary soldier being helped out of the trench and into battle by the hand of an unseen comrade, urges American civilians to support the troops by purchasing bonds for the Third Liberty Loan of April 1918. The Liberty Loan Committee referred to in the small print here was responsible for the Second Federal Reserve District, located in New York City, and one of the organizations formed to run the campaigns in each of the 12 Federal Reserve Districts of the United States. Charles N. Sarka was a Chicago-born watercolorist and a successful commercial illustrator for such popular magazines as Harper’s, Scribner’s, Collier’s, and Red Book. The poster was based on one of the many war-related covers he designed for Leslie’s Illustrated Weekly Newspaper.
