This is one of many posters French-born artist, illustrator, and social critic Tomi Ungerer produced to promote the Village Voice newspaper during his years in New York during the late 1960s. Like this one, they typically incorporate colorful, humorous vignettes redolent of Victorian naughtiness. His subversive designs were well suited to the Voice; founded in 1955, it quickly became a sounding board for the counterculture, first of the Beat generation, and, by the late ‘60s, of the hippies.
